An element that exists as a red, volatile
liquid at room temperature; symbol Br, atomic
number 35, relative atomic mass 79.909.
Bromine is poisonous and a member of the
halogen series of elements. It is found in
small quantities in sea water and is used as
an anti-knock petrol additive. Its compounds
are used in photography and in the chemical
and pharmaceutical industries. Salts of
bromine are known as bromides.
